Space planning is my favorite aspect of the whole design process. It is the foundation where the new room starts to be reimagined and absolutely essential to any remodel. I love this phase because of the excitement about a new project and where I feel most creative. Most often I am designing within an existing space that needs to be reworked and freshened up, but my favorite projects are when we get to relocate the kitchen entirely and change the layout/flow of the house.
The original narrow kitchen in this Spanish home was in an adjacent room that did not have much natural lighting. After assessing the client’s lifestyle and needs, we determined it would be best to move the kitchen into the existing family room—a much larger and open space. The client now has a bright and beautiful kitchen with an island. The previous kitchen transitioned into a smaller, casual space to relax and wind down.
